If it has to do with environmental science or building science, and requires state of the art diagnostic equipment, Professional House Doctors, Inc.Ò is here to help.

Our state of the art diagnostic equipment and extensive background in building science technology allows us to analyze any thermodynamic or structural moisture problem you might be having. We provide unbiased information so that the proper solution may be implemented by yourself or any contractor you select.

If you are experiencing excessively high utility bills, uncomfortable areas in your home, unusual moisture problems or have any problems with thermal performance or structural moisture integrity, we can help. As building science consultants, we provide solid advice by conducting an investigation of your structure to identify the cause of the problem. We then provide practical solutions for repair and control before more serious conditions can occur. Much of the same diagnostic equipment we use for heat loss analysis also helps to identify and solve moisture problems of all kinds...a big part of our ability to help owners solve their mold problems.

Are You Paying Too Much To Heat Your Home?

Most people are familiar with the Miles Per Gallon rating system for cars and now there is a way to do the same for your home. Follow the formula below and rate your homes energy efficiency. A rating of 2 to 5 means you are doing very well. A rating of 5 means you meet the minimum requirements acceptable by The National Energy Code (the minimum requirement of most State Laws). A rating over 5 and more work can be done to make your home waste less energy. A rating of 10 and you're paying twice as much as you should to heat every square foot in your home. Here’s the formula:

CCF x Pressure Factor x BTU Factor x 100,000 = Actual Therms Used / Heating Degree Days / Square Footage = Homes Efficiency Rating

To figure the above formula, take 3 or 4 months of your winter utility bills. Then fill out the formula and calculate it for each month. Your utility company can usually give you all of the above information except square footage of your home. If they do not have Heating Degree Days for your area, that information is available from most State Climatological Offices.

CCF = Cubic Feet of gas consumed

Pressure Factor = Correction for pressure loss

BTU Factor = Correction for gas vs. air mixture received

100,000 = Normal number of BTU’s in a CCF

Heating Degree Days = Number of degrees below 65 for the same days corresponding to your billing cycle for the month.

Square Footage = Area of home intentionally heated

Homes Efficiency Rating = Number of BTU’s needed per sq.ft. per degree day. Should be less than 5.

If your home is near or above 5, there is still much that can be done. The reason for the poor efficiency of course varies with every home.
